The Raphael exhibition, promoted by the Regione Marche and presented in Macerata in the Innocenti Corridor of the Sferisterio, brings together 46 works by Raphael reproduced on a 1:1 scale, including the fresco of The School of Athens (7x5m): a panoramic view that arouses great emotion because no one before - not even Raphael himself - had been able to admire all these masterpieces, arranged side by side. Thanks to the high resolution of the images, visitors will be able to recognise in the backgrounds of Raphael's paintings the trees, flowers, bell towers and villages that, still intact today, adorn the landscape of the Regione Marche.
The scientific director of the exhibition is Ferdinando Bologna, a distinguished art historian and close collaborator of Roberto Longhi, who died in 2019.
The Impossible Exhibitions is a project conceived by Renato Parascandolo. The art direction is by Maria Teresa de Vito; the exhibition design is by architect Giovanna Parascandolo.
Raphael was born in Urbino, now in Regione delle Marche, when the Signoria of Federico da Montefeltro witnessed a fervid cultural weave, open to many exchanges, some foreign. He was inevitably marked by his unforgotten birthtown, and recalled it in his signature: Raphael Urbinas. The Renaissance of Urbino, called "mathematical", was the basis for Raphael’s vision of art and reality. His début was influenced by his father, heir to the tradition, exhausted but revisited by Raphael with successful results, before the pivotal encounter with Perugino, whom he already surpasses in the great ‘Marriage of the Virgin’. The work takes the architecture of fellow countryman Bramante in search of rational harmony, fruit of Piero della Francesca’s lesson and dialogue with antiquity, also appearing in the ‘Three Graces’. The fundamental experience of the Florentine stay highlights Raphael’s extraordinary ability to observe and absorb those elements most suiting his sensitivity, in a personal reworking that becomes original. Inevitable reflection on Michelangelo’s tormented plasticity leads to the theatrical ‘Deposition’, while the atmospheric sfumato of Leonardo returns in the soft, enveloping motion of the marine figures, satisfied by the relationship with a sweet, friendly landscape. The purified, idealised faces of the Madonnas maintain the everyday reality of their origin, and stand alongside portraits in which the artist places the subjects’ features in history and life: the rich Florentine bourgeoisie, pragmatic and opulent as incarnated by the Doni spouses, reveals a character very diffent from the Montefeltro, closed in the impassive coldness of noble lineage. The gaze aims to show maturity and "feel" the individual, emerging from a neutral background so as not to lower concentration on the subject; the balance of ‘Castiglione’, defined by Ferdinando Bologna as one of the most beautiful portraits ever painted; the thoughtful intensity of the Pope discussing with his counsellors; the carnal beauty of the ‘Fornarina’, symbolically considered with the ‘Woman with a Veil’ as an expression of the two faces of love. Raphael expressed the Idea of Beauty, and as he wrote in the letter to Baldassar Castiglione, "to paint a beauty, I should have to see a number of beauties. But in the absence of good judges and beautiful women, I use an idea that comes to my mind". Now the artist, though still young, was mature for the challenge of frescoes, where, as Vasari said, he appeared "so lively and ready as to compete efficiently with the written word". The calibrated, grandiose composition of ‘The School of Athens’ offers the vision of a harmonious world, in a happy synthesis of abstract and concrete, ideas and reality. The viewer may also settle beside Pope Julius II, commissioner of the Vatican Halls decoration, and enjoy the consent of the greats, recognising their faces and observing them as if on site, due to the absolute faithfulness of the high-resolution, 1:1 reproductions. A final look, too, at the barely concealed nudity of a beautiful ‘Galatea’, a refined, complex myth reproposed with a new slant that opens the way to future “classicism” and demonstrates the artist’s fortune in its numerous reworkings on other supports, such as engravings, maiolicas, even maps.
