The presentation of the holy group, made up around a rotating pyramid structure, marked a turning point in the conception of altar panels. Together with studies for the Battle of Anghiari, the painting sets a benchmark in Leonardo's aims in analysing moving figures, through the slant with which the Virgin, almost rising from the lap of the mother – Saint Anna –, grasps the Son, who clasps the lamb, emblem of the passion of Christ. The growing spray from the country background, scanned by distanced mirrors of water with rough rocky juts, emphasises the whirlwind, wavy effect of the main scene. And the wisely modulated use of “sfumato” in rendering the faces softens the characters’ features and expressions, so they live and palpitate.
