Olio su tavola di pioppoOil on poplarHuile sur panneau de peuplier, 72 x 55 cm., anno 1507 ca.

Documented in the prestigious Aldobrandini and Borghese Roman collections during the 18th century, this painting became part of the National Gallery, in London, in 1839. Its execution goes back to the final stage of Raphael’s stay in Florence (1504-1508), where the artist became acquainted with the work of Michelangelo, who led Raphael to develop further, as the body and head twists here indicate. The monumentality of the forms characterises this image: consider the cog in the right corner, used to torture Alexandrian martyrs.
