L’opera è datata nell’anno in cui il doge di Venezia Leonardo Loredan, entrò in carica. Bellini lo ritrae con le tipiche vesti che contraddistinguevano l’incarico di doge, quali il copricapo “corno” posto sulla camaura, l’abito broccato bianco e oro a collo alto e chiuso da bottoni d’oro. Si percepisce l’influenza di Antonello da Messina nel realismo dei dettagli, come per esempio le rughe sul volto, o anche dalla posizione del soggetto: a tre quarti, come da tradizione fiamminga, piuttosto che di profilo.

The work is dated to the year in which the Doge of Venice, Leonardo Loredan, took charge. Bellini portrays him in the typical robes that distinguished the Doge's office, such as the "horn" headgear on the camouflage, the white and gold brocade dress with a high neck and closed with gold buttons. The influence of Antonello da Messina can be perceived in the realism of the details, such as the wrinkles on the face, or even in the position of the subject: three-quarters, as per Flemish tradition, rather than in profile.
