Tempera e oro su tavolaTempera and gold on panel, 150 x 158 cm., anno 1449 - 1450

The work has an ascensional way, with the Virgin Mary in prayer ascending from the tomb in the centre. Around the divine figure, the nimbus has been carefully detailed in the material, gold, and arranged according to the symbolic form of the almond. On either side of Mary we find the two saints: Saint Julian the Hospitaller on the left, holding the sword; and Saint Miniato on the right, with crown and wand. Around the nimbus we find two angelic figures intent on flying, painted with extreme accuracy to convey the sensation of suspension from the ground. The colours are very bright but blend perfectly thanks to the skilful use of gold.
