The work, commissioned in 1502 by Maddalena degli Oddi for the church of San Francesco al Prato in Perugia, realized by Raphael around the age of 20, represents the coronation of the Virgin, and her assumption. In the upper register Christ crowns his mother among angels musicians according to traditional iconography. The sacred stillness of the scene is barely interrupted by the light motion of the garlands of the angels standing as if they had come in a gust of wind. In the lower register the ecstatic apostles admire the miraculous event of the Assumption into heaven around the empty tomb, represented as an open classical sarcophagus from which the Virgin's flowers rise: the lily of purity and the mystical rose alluding even to the cup of Christ the Redeemer's blood. The sacred caterpillar, the precious Marian relic held by Thomas, strengthens the bond between the Virgin mother and men. The Altarpiece takes up the layout of Perugino's works such as the double spatial register, even if the differences in style between the two sections have led to the hypothesis that it was made in two moments, which seems to be confirmed also by radiographic and reflectographic investigations.

The predella, also detached and preserved in the Pinacoteca Vaticana, is composed of three compartments, on wood, divided by candelabra decorations. The Marian scenes (you can admire them reproduced next to the painting), recall three episodes from Christ's childhood - the Annunciation, the Adoration of the Magi and the Presentation in the Temple. The model is the predella of the Fano Altarpiece by Perugino, so much so that Vasari commented: “It is very notable that Raphael, studying the manner of Pietro, imitate it in every aspect so closely that his copies could not be distinguished from the master’s originals... As is openly demonstrated again by some figures in San Francesco di Perugia, whom he worked on in an oil panel for Madonna Madalena degli Oddi .... At the foot of the panel, in a predella of small figures divided into three stories, there is the Angel’s Annunciation to Our Lady, when the Magi adore Christ, and when He is in the Temple in Simeone’s arms: this work was certainly made with some diligence; and anyone lacking the manner would be firmly convinced that it was by Pietro’s hand, where it is doubtlessly Raphael’s”.

This altarpiece was brought to France in 1797 by Napoleon, where it was transferred to canvas, before returning to Italy and Pope Pius VII placed it in the Pinacoteca.
