Giorgione organizes the pictorial space of this work by dividing it into two parts: on the right, placed in front of the dark grotto, the Holy Family with the two shepherds in adoration; on the left, the country landscape dominated by two trees in the foreground and by the profile of the mountains in the background that pick up the blue and gray tones of the sky. The light of the painting is sometimes sharp, especially on the clothes, sometimes softer as on the countryside and the figures come to life thanks to the superimposition of color, without the use of the contour, according to the technique of tonalism, of which Giorgione is one of the greatest interpreters.
