The intensity of the painting is enclosed in the dialogue between Mother and Son, who leans forward towards her son, visibly full of wonder and thought, recognizing in the humility of her person the greatness of the event of which she was the protagonist. The Son extends his arms towards her and moves, toddles, smiles, as if to reassure her. Lotto in his theological preparation tells us about the event that will change the history of the world, an event placed on earth in a hut. From the earth the new life is born, with the manifest desire to grow. The Holy Family is evoked with warm and bright colors, with an interesting play of contrasts between light and shadow. The scene is in fact seen from inside the hut, where Mary and Joseph are adoring the Child placed on a sheet rolled up in a wicker basket, near a sack and a barrel that remind them of the journey that awaits them, the flight to Egypt. From the door opens a beautiful country landscape, with three singing angels that soothe the scene, while on the left, behind the doorframe and in shadow, you can see a crucifix that recalls the tragic fate of Jesus. The depiction of Joseph genuflected in adoration, very different from the traditional depictions that saw him at a distance from the central scene, almost extraneous, in this panel Lotto presents him with a smile on his face, in adoration.
