The young Caravaggio’s interest in the world of music sung and played, and not in purely musicological terms, rather as a fact affirmed on the moment of realisation, was favoured by the entourage of Cardinal del Monte. The Cardinal, one of the main protectors in his youth, had a music chamber with a series of instruments, listed in the inventories and certainly taken by Caravaggio as a model for a picture like this. The lute is an example of still life with a musical instrument. The wood and strings are grasped with optical acuteness, and the same can be said of the musical score, which can again be read and performed as in the Rest on the Flight into Egypt.
