Il personaggio in cui è identificata la Santa Caterina d'Alesandria è un personaggio vero, che Caravaggio ha rappresentato più volte nei quadri realizzati nel periodo. Era una prostituta di alto bordo, venuta giovanissima da Siena a Roma e molto richiesta anche in alto ceto, che poi a Roma voleva dire ceto cardinalizio. La figura della Santa Caterina qui è avvolta in un bellissimo manto azzurro, tempestato di rametti d'oro, che crea una levitazione delle qualità pittoriche che anticipa addirittura Vermeer.

She was a high-level prostitute, who came from Siena to Rome when very young; she was highly sought-after even in the upper class, which in Rome then meant the Cardinal class. Here, the figure of Saint Catherine is wrapped in a beautiful blue mantle, adorned with gold branchlets, creating a levitation of the pictorial qualities that even anticipates Vermeer.
