L’opera fu realizzata dal Caravaggio su commissione del cardinale Scipione Borghese, segretario di stato di Paolo V. Erasmo da Rotterdam aveva deplorato che San Gerolamo si rappresentasse come un personaggio bizzarro che cura la zampa del leone e raccomandava, invece, che la rappresentazione dei santi fosse ridotta all’essenziale, senza dimenticare che erano stati uomini e come uomini dovevano essere riproposti. Si tratta di un altro aspetto delle convinzioni profonde di Caravaggio nella rappresentazione dei temi sacri, ma anche dei temi profani. La volontà è quella di riportare la tematica, sia religiosa, che profana, che letteraria, che mitologica, alla sua radice naturalistica, al modo assolutamente evidente e quotidiano con cui il fenomeno si è manifestato alle origini.

Erasmus of Rotterdam deplored the fact that Saint Jerome was depicted as a bizarre man tending the lion’s leg. He recommended rather that the portrayal of saints be reduced to the essential, bearing in mind they were men and should be presented as such. This involves another aspect of Caravaggio’s profound convictions in illustrating sacred, but also profane themes. He wanted to bring these subjects – both religious and earthly, both literary and mythological – back to their naturalistic roots, to the absolutely evident and everyday ways in which phenomena are manifested at their origins.
