Of all the Contarelli Chapel canvases, this work was certainly the most tortured in both conception and realisation. X-rays have revealed two layers preceding to the one finally licenced. The painting contains a self-portrait by Caravaggio. His self-portraits mainly appear in pictures from the early Roman phase, but there is one here, bottom left, in the midst of the plumed-haired knights, a piece of extraordinary emphasis... It intervenes in the portrayal, almost as if to say: “What you see happened, so much so that I myself could have been its witness”.
