L’opera è una delle acquisizioni più recenti della critica su Caravaggio. Il principale sostenitore di questa attribuzione è stato Roberto Longhi, che resta il miglior conoscitore del maestro. E proprio Longhi, nel proporre l’attribuzione del quadro, notava la figura dell’angelo, che considerava portentosa e la parte più intensa, più autentica e materialmente più convincente di tutto il dipinto.

Tutto il resto è opera di rifacimenti successivi, e infatti ricerche recenti dicono che il dipinto è stato ritoccato a metà del ‘700 da mani ben diverse da Caravaggio, sia per la qualità che per gli orientamenti culturali.

The work is one of the critics’ most recent Caravaggio acquisitions. The main supporter of this attribution has been Roberto Longhi, who remains the master’s greatest connoisseur. And in suggesting the attribution of the painting, it was Longhi who noticed the figure of the angel, which he considered portentous and the most intense, authentic and materially convincing part of all the painting.

All the rest is the work of following reworking, and indeed recent research say the painting was rehashed in the mid-1700’s by hands very unlike Caravaggio’s, in both quality and cultural orientation.
