Eseguita quasi contemporaneamente alla Resurrezione di Lazzaro e alla Sepoltura di Santa Lucia, l'Adorazione dei pastori è di una semplicità estrema e può rappresentare il culmine dell'interesse di Caravaggio per il mondo degli oggetti inanimati. La valorizzazione dei dettagli in questa natura morta, con gli attrezzi del falegname, i fili di paglia in primo piano e la raffigurazione del tetto della capanna nella parte superiore, è molto enfatica e può essere allineata a quella ricerca di spazi vuoti che aveva caratterizzato le opere siracusane e messinesi, eseguite immediatamente prima, in termini quasi pre-rembrandiani.

Executed almost simultaneously with the Resurrection of Lazarus and the Burial of Saint Lucia, the Adoration of the Shepherds is of extreme simplicity and may represent the summit of Caravaggio’s interest in the world of inanimate objects. The appreciation of details in this still life, with the carpenter’s tools, the strands of straw in close-up and the portrayal of the roof of the hut in the above part is very emphatic and can be aligned with that research into empty spaces that had characterised the works from Syracuse and Messina, executed immediately before, in almost pre-Rembrandtian terms.
