The National Gallery painting, probably fruit of collaboration, was documented at Milan in San Francesco Grande until the end of the 1700’s. With respect to the Louvre copy, the London panel’s relevant data lies in the figure of the angel who no longer points to the Baptist, «an important detail, that cannot be considered casual», linkable to «the even violent contrasts regarding the theme of the Immaculate Conception», doubtlessly involving the eponymous Milanese co-fraternity, commissioner of the Vincean painting. «The addition of the Cross on Saint John’s shoulder shifted the emphasis to the theme of Christ's sacrifice and the Passion, also alluded to… by the symbolism of the flowers» in the foreground (M. Calì).
