Unlike the other parts, the Adoration of the Magi lacks the architectural structure and all concentration is focused on the dense throng of characters divided into two groups but set out dynamically as if on a stage, also a Passion Play. On the background of a hilly landscape, formed by a bluish sfumato light, interrupted by little trees, the dark mass of a building in ruins stands out, its walls partially collapsed, perhaps to recall the symbolic meaning of the hut, portrayed as remains to allude to the end of the Pagan world replaced by the Christian truth. Attention centres on the characters, particularly the mass of supporters, whose clothes and gestures are carefully studied: the short socks and doublets of the two turned pages point to anatomical studies; the youngest of the Magi in the centre, his pose rather affected and close to Perugino almost acts to link the two groups, and forms with the two others those specific references to the three ages of men represented by the kings, well depicted not only by their physiognomies – beardless, with a goatee, and bearded – but ma also by the clothes, where the elderly king marks his oriental origin with the characteristic head covering. The division in space through the characters’ semicircular movements is both symbolic and compositional in meaning. The artist uses the counterposition of two groups to create a sort of sacred space around the Virgin and Children, open, circular and almost three-dimensional, highlighting the theatrical flavour of the scene. The difference between the two groups is also emphasised by the canvas, its aggressive greens and shining whites in the cortege contrasting the softer blues and magentas of those standing around the Holy Family and the dimmed browns of the shepherds, humble representatives of the subordinate classes. Raphael unites the majesty of a royal procession, as understood by the painters of the Umbria school, with the movement and action of the Florentines, displaying his acquired ability to master complex spatial structures through atmospheric and lighting effects. The Adoration is not a part of the Fano Altarpiece subjects but derives from a famous fresco by Perugino in Florence, now destroyed, and others works by the Umbrian painter.
