The scene is set within an architectural space depicted with perspective, opening up towards a wide countryside, and is fully solved by the close-ups as subjects occupy limited depth. The eleborate frame of the arches and columns clearly divides the scenes, fixing the groups of actors. At the centre, the priest Simeon welcomes the Child from the arms of Mary, who wears the red dress with its wide blue neck in accordance with traditional iconography. Her long, blonde hair, gathered into a simple style, highlights the grace of her face, while the figure approaches a polite twist which corresponds to Joseph’s to create almost rhythmical harmonic cadences. A type of inner rule also informs other groups, each of which appears isolated, fixed in the doorway created by the architecture, inserted into its appointed place according to a highly theatrical layout, where the elaborated table-altar of the vase-shaped pedestal, almost an allusion to the chalice of the Eucharist, asserts itself in its sculptural model to create a kind of link. In this rigorous partition of the space, which takes on moral value, the attitudes of several figures assume a special ethos. The kind gesture of the child turning towards his mother in a tender search for protection demonstrates how far the artist has been involved in portraying human relationships and the motions of affection, even within the holy scenes. The chromatic scale also contributes to setting out places and roles: the foreground is characterised by the full, gaudy tones of the clothes, highlighted by the luminous ochre of the columns, while the landscape is attenuated in the colder passages of the intense blue sky and dark green hills. The simple, ancient-style clothing is typical of the holy level of the action, with few concessions to fashion apart from some esoteric touches in the style of the head covering. Like the Annunciation, the Presentation at the Temples derives from the analogous scene from the Fano Altarpiece by Perugino, taking up its central group, while the supporting subjects are also inspired by the figures in the Marriage of the Virgin, also by Perugino (Caen, Musée des Beaux-Arts, 1501-4), especially the man in the cloak and hat caught from behind. The dilatation of space and aware use of colour and light, as well as the grace and ease of the figures, create a different spirit from the model, with personal results already taking distance from the master. Preparatory sketches are conserved at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, in which similarities to Filippo Lippi have been found, and the British Museum, London, for the Woman with Doves, which displays study of drapes, also close to Perugino in style.
