Il Palio della prima edizione del 1982 raffigura in primo piano una dama e il suo cavaliere intenti ad assistere alla Giostra della Quintana. L'opera è stata realizzata da Salvatore Fiume, nato nel 1915 a Comiso, in Sicilia. La sua formazione artistica iniziò presso il Regio Istituto d'Arte del Libro di Urbino dove approfondì tecniche di stampa come la litografia, la serigrafia e la xilografia. Fiume è stato un artista poliedrico, distintosi come pittore, scultore, architetto, scrittore e scenografo. Nel 1936 si trasferì a Milano, entrando in contatto con intellettuali del calibro di Salvatore Quasimodo e Dino Buzzati. Due anni dopo, divenne direttore artistico della rivista "Tecnica e Organizzazione" della Olivetti, a Ivrea. Negli anni '50, Fiume realizzò importanti commissioni, tra cui un'opera di 48 metri per il transatlantico "Andrea Doria" e una serie di dipinti per le riviste "Life" e "Time". Le sue opere sono esposte in musei prestigiosi come i Musei Vaticani, l'Ermitage di San Pietroburgo e il MoMA di New York. Lo stile figurativo è caratterizzato da un acceso colorismo e da un impianto compositivo statico-monumentale. Nei suoi dipinti prevalgono i temi di fantasia, le atmosfere magiche e metafisiche (isole in città di statue), odalische e scene esotiche.
La dama e il cavaliere, protagonisti della scena, sono rappresentati con eleganza e un senso teatrale. I due personaggi, con i loro abiti sontuosi e dettagli ricercati, sembrano richiamare l’atmosfera barocca, tipica della Quintana, e al tempo stesso rivelano la cifra stilistica di Fiume, fatta di colori accesi e pennellate vibranti. Lo sguardo diretto della dama cattura l'attenzione dell'osservatore, mentre il cavaliere, con il volto parzialmente coperto dal cappello, evoca un senso di mistero e romanticismo. Il rosso intenso dello sfondo, che avvolge la dama, non è solo decorativo, ma conferisce una potenza emotiva alla scena, facendo emergere la vitalità e l’entusiasmo della competizione cavalleresca. Il piccolo cane, in braccio alla dama, è un dettaglio che aggiunge un tocco di intimità e quotidianità alla scena, rompendo la solennità e invitando l'osservatore a cogliere i particolari.

The work was created by Salvatore Fiume, born in 1915 in Comiso, Sicily. The lady’s direct gaze captures the viewer’s attention, while the knight, with his face partially hidden by his hat, suggests mystery and romance. The intense red of the background, enveloping the lady, is not merely decorative; it imparts emotional power to the scene, conveying the vitality and enthusiasm of the chivalric competition. The small dog in the lady’s arms adds a touch of intimacy and everyday life to the scene, breaking the solemnity and inviting the observer to notice the details.
The Palio of the first edition of 1982 was won by the Spada Quarter with the knight Gianfranco Ricci.
