Known as "the Thoughtful" due to his idealisation by Michelangelo in the tomb of Sacrestia Nuova in San Lorenzo at Florence, Lorenzo, the only male child of Piero "the Fatuous" and Alfonsina Orsini, grandson of the Magnificent, spent his youth at Rome, where the Medici had found refuge after being exiled from Florence in 1494. He returned to the city in 1512 thanks to the support of Pope Jules II, and in 1516, with Leo X’s help, obtained the Duchy of Urbino. He died of syphilis 21 days after the birth of his daughter Caterina, future Queen of France. On 15 May 1518 he married at Amboise Madeleine de la Tour d'Auvergne, probably the planned recipient of the sumptuous portrait sent to France so as to show her her betrothed’s appearance on the occasion of the engagement. A further allusion to the happy circumstance may be the golden box which is held by the youth in his hand and said to contain the traditional wax portrait of the bride.

Machiavelli dedicated The Prince to him.

Proof of Raphael’s authorship has been sought in the belt knot, where a backwards R is believed to be visible, the initial of the painter’s name; the painting was in any case identified as the portrait described in the 1560 Medici Wardrobe inventory, made between January and February 1518. The young man’ posture, secure attitude and – especially –  rich clothing connote this as a work for a special occasion, aiming to display the subject’s physical, moral gifts and membership of a very high social class. The luminous, shining foliage highlights the elegance and preciousness of the dress, emphasising the motif of the pomegranate brocade and the gold weave, enlivening the large, well-padded sleeves so as to bring out the man’s shoulders and male beauty. The medal-adorned beret, the thickly-folded shirt, the rich robone lined with lynx fur that emerges from the cuts and even the beard and moustache obey the dictates of fashion, while the choice of gold and red colours, indicating prized drapes and symbolizing royalty, underline his role and status. The palette, bright but softened by the light, forms the figure and reverberates in the facial features, studied with the usual attention to character as well as mere physiognomy. The painting comes from the collection of Ira Spanierman, who bought it at auction in New York in 1968; in July 2007 it was beaten by Christie's in London and assigned to a collector for an exorbitant price.
